Contraindications

Contraindications are physical or behavioural reasons that would prevent a massage from taking place in full (or in part) safely. There are 3 types of contraindications.

Guideline lists are provided below to help you pre-empt the consultation which takes part on your arrival for treatment.

TOTAL Contraindications: (It is better not to massage any part of the body as there will always be a risk)

    DISEASE: Any contagious disease such as influenza, tuberculosis, chicken pox , mumps.

    DRUGS / ALCOHOL: Anyone under influence of recreational drugs or alcohol.

    FEELING UNWELL: Vomiting, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea. 

    FEVER: Anyone with a high temperature.

    INFECTION: Anyone weak or clinically exhausted i.e. recovering from a viral infection, generally unwell,  infectious skin complaints, scabies, herpes, warts, cancer, flu, bronchitis, kidney infection.

    HEAVY MEAL: Anyone who had a heavy meal prior to the treatment.

    PREGNANCY: Anyone in their 1st Trimester of Pregnancy or experiencing any problems with their pregnancy.

MEDICAL Contraindications: (Medical approval in writing is needed, either by GP or Specialist)

    ACUTE RHEUMATISM: Anyone suffering from muscle or bone pain.

    ALLERGY: Anyone with a nut allergy - inform therapist so a different massage media can be used (i.e. not almond oil).

    ASTHMA: If massage does not trigger Asthma it is ok to perform the treatment. GP should give consent first. Sufferers should carry inhaler.

    CANCER: Any type of skin cancer.

    CARDIO VASCULAR CONDITIONS: Any heart conditions like thrombosis/embolism, phlebitis, heart disorder, hyper/hypotension.

    DIABETES: Anyone on steroid treatment.

    HEADACHES: Continious headaches, feeling sick, nausea.

    EPILEPSY: Controlled epilepsy is ok with GP or specialist approval.

    EXISTING CONDITION: Any condition already being treated by a GP or specialist or another complementary practitioner.

    INFLAMMATION: Anyone with rheumatoid arthritis. Anyone with a red, hot and swollen area.

    MEDICAL OEDEMA: Any sort of swelling.

    MEDICATION: Anyone on prescribed medication.

    NERVOUS / PSYCHOTIC CONDITION: Anyone suffering from this condition and or is on medication to control the condition.

    DYSFUNCTION OF NERVOUS SYSTEM: Anyone suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Bells Palsy, trapped or pinches nerve i.e. Sciatica, inflamed nerve, postural deformities, spastic conditions.

    HAEMOPHILIA: Anyone suffering from this condition.

    OSTEOPOROSIS: Anyone with porous, brittle or fragile bones.

    PINS & PLATES: Anyone with pins & plates to stabilise bones and joints.

    SURGERY: Anyone who had major surgery in the last 24 months. Anyone who had minor surgery in the last 6 months.

 LOCAL Contraindications: (areas of the body should be avoided)

BLOOD PRESSURE: Anyone with high blood pressure. Anyone with low blood pressure.

HERNIA: Anyone suffering from a hernia or had a recent operation.

HIV: Anyone with visible rashes, sores, lesions or swelling.

HRT: Anyone with implants.

INJURIES / OPERATIONS: Anyone with a recent fracture, broken bones, strain or sprain.

NECK / BACK PROBLEMS: Any conditions affecting the neck or back.

LUMPS & BUMPS: Undiagnosed lumps & bumps.

MENSTRUATION: 1st few days of period.

SKIN PROBLEMS: Any type of bacterial infection, skin disease, disorder i.e. acne vulgaris, eczema/psoriasisor or skin cancer. Nail disease and scalp infections.  Irritation of the skin.  Scar tissue, bruises, burns, blisters, cuts & grazes, abrasions, rashes, bites, wounds, sun burn.

UNDIAGNOSED PAIN: Anyone in pain.

VARICOSE VEINS: Anyone suffering from varicose veins, painful veins.

A consultation form must be completed prior to treatment in order to ascertain whether you have any contraindications or 'special care' conditions present. This is done in order to prioritise your health and the health of your therapist. In the case of certain conditions consent will be required from your GP or specialist.
